Golden Child Awards Foundation Charity Basketball Event

The Golden Child Award is an award given to a child who is going through or has gone through a physical or mental challenge due to an injury or adverse condition and has persevered.   In the past ten years, the GCAF, a non-profit organization 501©3, has reached out to families and awarded their children who have gone through traumatic occurrences.  These recipients are all victims of traumatic events, survivors, and motivators in the community.  They have exemplified the meaning of inspiration and in doing so they have touched all of us in a profound, positive, and personal way.   A portion of the proceeds from the event will be awarded to the recipient in the form of a monetary contribution to assist in financial hardship, unpaid medical expenses, and/or future education.

We provide support to the past and present recipients by providing holiday meals for the less fortune families.  We provide educational support by providing school supplies, computers, etc.  Our commitment extends beyond our event and last several years after the recipient has been selected as the recipient.  Usually, until they enter college.

Welcome

Our Mission

The mission of the Golden Child Awards Foundation (GCAF) is to improve the quality of life for young individuals who have had a traumatic occurrence in life (e.g., hit by a drunken driver, attacked by pit-bulls, sniper victim, physical abuse, etc.).  The foundation’s goal is to provide support for the individual to heal, as well as the community, which witness such occurrences and need to heal too.  We hold a three-day weekend basketball tournament to raise funds and the awareness of children in need in our community.

We try to build healthier and stronger communities by providing events which the community can take part.  We provide an environment where mothers and sons, fathers and daughters can come together and enjoy themselves in a safe and enjoyable environment.  We build relationships with local businesses in hopes that they contribute to the event to make their neighborhoods a better place to live.  Through our foundation, we bring individuals together that may not normally interact but eventually realize by being together at our events that differences are alright and getting to know more about others helps yourself.

We are strong advocates of uplifting the awareness of our youth in the importance of advancing their education.  We give support by providing funding for recipients to go to college, access to financial literacy programs, and support through educational supplies and tools.

ACE CASH EXPRESS DONATES

WASHINGTON’S GOLDEN CHILD AWARDS FOUNDATION

RECEIVES DONATION FROM ACE CASH EXPRESS

Washington, DC (April 28, 2008) – In adhering to one of its corporate principals of making donations to community organizations that help children, Texas-based ACE Cash Express, Inc. recently made a $2,500 contribution to the District’s Golden Child Awards Foundation.

Founded in 2000, the Golden Child Awards Foundation (GCAF) was established by several Metropolitan Washington Police Department officers who serve on the department’s SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) squad.  The primary function of the Foundation is to “provide funds to children who are going through or have gone through physical and/or mental challenges due to injuries or adverse conditions and have persevered.”  Since its inception, the Foundation has reached out to numerous Washington families and awarded funds to their children who have gone through traumatic occurrences.

One of the most notable recipients was Iran Brown, one of the few survivors from the “Washington Area Sniper” attacks that terrorized the region in 2002.

The primary fund-raising vehicle for the Foundation is a three-day basketball tournament at Trinity University in Washington.  The tournament features professional and collegiate basketball players and also showcases the Washington area’s top girls and boys high school teams.  This year’s tournament is set for June 6-8, 2008.

In making the donation to the founders of the Golden Child Awards Foundation, Sonny Eyabi, Regional Vice President for ACE Cash Express, said “We are extremely proud to make a contribution to this fine organization.  For the past seven years, this foundation has consistently provided great support to needy youngsters in the District.  The Golden Child Awards Foundation epitomizes the type of organization that ACE loves to support.”

“We are very pleased and honored to receive a contribution from ACE Cash Express,” said Golden Child Awards Foundation President and co-founder, Billy Wright. “Our annual basketball tournament is a critical source of funds for our organization and the donation from ACE will certainly help us in our efforts to organize this year’s tournament.”

With more than 1,800 stores nationwide and 15 facilities in Washington, DC, ACE is one of the premier financial service companies in the nation’s capital.  For more than 17 years, ACE has provided District residents with a wide range of services that have included check cashing, utility bill payments and debit cards.
